At the beginning of this week I received an email from a stranger. They claimed to be a friend of 'Nancy' and they were given my business's name as a great place to buy products for a family reunion they were planning soon and wondered if I'd be able to provide gifts for the family members attending the event and have them shipped by July 1st. Kind of close but doable, so I said yes.
They asked for five bars each of Clear Skies Milk Soap, Galahad Aloe Juice Spa bars, 5 bottles of Woodlands scent Beard oil, 5 tubs of Body Butter, Zen fragrance and five bottles, 8 oz of our Silk Body Wash in Sangria scent. Well, someone was planning on going all out for their family and yet something warned me about this one. The grammar, punctuation, spelling and syntax were a bit off but then mine is occasionally bad if my nails grow too long,so I let it pass.
Still there was one other thing about these items. They said they'd been to my site, yet didn't know the prices of these items and weren't aware that there were a couple of items that were not available in quantities of five. Odd.
I decided to ask for the name of the person referring my business to them so I could offer a reward for sending them my way for their business and they said 'Nancy' but she'd passed away two months ago. Okay, well, I checked into that and apparently there was no Nancy - ever - in my database going back as far as the very first day I opened for business. Odd again. Could not be an alias. Not an error. More red flags start flying at full staff.
To begin with they'd stated they wanted to order via phone because they're leery of ordering online since they'd had their number stolen twice in recent years from doing their shopping in that manner and despite my reassurances that my entire site, not just the cart page, is SSl certified, they still wanted to order via phone. Okay. Odd, but not without precedent. One customer ordered in that same manner every Christmas. A very nice lady she is, too.
I get it. ID theft is everywhere, hackers can easily steal you blind with just a few clicks, If ever they're standing too close to you in a line somewhere (grocery store, bank, fast food restaurant) they can scan your card right through your purse/pocket with an app on their smart phones and they're away and your money's gone with them before you even know it happened. So I said I understood but still leery of this person. Too many odd things are falling into place now for my liking.
As yet, I had not processed anything from them. Did not heard from them again for the placement of their order yet in the wee hours of this morning (they responded at 4:43 am EDT) that they wanted me to do them one more favor. Add in iTunes Gift cards with this order and they'll cover the cost with the credit card when they call to place the order.
1) Why were they so anxious for wholesale or bargain prices at the beginning of this negotiation only to add in expensive gift cards at the very end - and -
2) why wait until the very last second to add in this pretty odd request from an online bath & body product retailer?
Too much. The alarms were clanging at a deafening decibel level at this new request.
I'd filled more beard oil bottles and made more body butter, using only Zen in this batch to cover their request yet those items are all going back into inventory and nothing is going out my door. They're all back in my shelves where they're staying until legitimate orders request them.
This guy is a rip off artist trying to screw around with my business's good name using stolen card numbers and I'm not falling for it. Nothing makes me angrier than someone trying to do harm to another innocent person (the real owner of that card number) and throwing me into the mix. So johnjay00423 your fun messing with me is over. Try it on someone else but make sure it isn't another soap maker. We've seen and heard it all now and know all about your kind.
I might shock you in this post when I say I'm excited about this coming fall season. I know anyone that knows me well is gasping and thinking I must be a pod person, taking over where Dee once was. But wait, there's a reason for this new attitude towards autumn this time. Don't get me wrong. I still love my summer seasons. I can't get enough of summertime weather, despite the humidity, steamy heat, high tempratures, and hot car seats. I love it all! But there's a lot of wonderful fragrances coming and yummy delights just waiting to be made that will bring that little extra snap to your holiday season and cooler, sweater-weather days. I can hardly wait to get started.
